The book combines highly up-to-date research with a wealth of real-world case studies to help readers make the transition from theory to practice. This student-focussed text draws together the latest key insights and research from contemporary academic writers in a way that is
both clear and highly engaging.
Divided into two main parts, the book guides the reader thematically through the big issues and debates in the field, including the leadership versus management debate, team performance, and the question of whether leaders are born or made. The first part of the book, 'Key themes in leadership', addresses the core topics which have shaped leadership thinking for academics and practitioners over the last fifty years. While the second part, 'Hot topics in leadership', is devoted to cutting-edge
debates within the field, and issues such as strategic leadership, ethical leadership, and leading change.
This clear and logical structure is combined with carefully designed learning features including blog boxes, film and media parallels, and discussion points to develop and support your learning, while the critical approach invites you to exercise your thinking skills and develop your own perspectives on the material presented. The authors draw upon their years' of academic and business experience to offer an insight into this important and dynamic field; making this text a must read for
students concerned with understanding or practicing leadership.

James MacGregor Burns

A Pulitzer Prize–winning historian examines transformational leaders from Moses to Machiavelli to Martin Luther King Jr. in this “impressive book” (The Washington Post). Historian and political scientist James MacGregor Burns has spent much of his career documenting the use and misuse of power by leaders throughout history. In this groundbreaking study, Burns examines the qualities that make certain leaders—in America and elsewhere—succeed as transformative figures. Through insightful anecdotes and historical analysis, Burns scrutinizes the charisma, vision, and persuasive power of individuals able to imbue followers with a common sense of purpose, from the founding fathers to FDR, Gandhi to Napoleon. Since its original publication in 1970, Leadership has set the standard for scholarship in the field.

Development of this text has been based on the notion that workforce education and development (WFED) systems—such as, secondary and postsecondary vocational and technical education (VTE), career education and guidance, human resource and organizational development (HROD), and adult training and retraining including literacy programs—have essential roles to play in supporting both individual and national efforts to successfully participate in and reap the benefits offered by globalization. While this assumption has intuitive appeal, not everyone believes that vocational preparation programs result in positive outcomes. Psacharopoulos (1997), an outspoken international critic of vocational education and training, argues that WFED programs often have a low rate of return on a country’s investment when compared to that of the general academic curriculum. He contends that WFED initiatives often fail because too much emphasis is placed on these efforts to address myriad complex issues, and that decision makers do not utilize the available evidence about VTE to make prudent, informed choices. Instead, major players in the global economy like the World Bank tout basic academic education as an essential priority for developing countries wanting to enter into global markets and exchange.
