When the legal system fails innocent victims, Jake and Thomas are there to right the wrongs and restore balance. Their vengeance is swift and without guilt or consequence. For years, they have acted independently, using their own judgment to decide who lives and who dies. Perhaps fate brings them together or perhaps it’s the arrival of a third killer. This new killer seems to murder for no reason at all. He is driven purely by blood with no rhyme or reason, making him both unpredictable and diabolical. In order to stop the growing body count in their city, Jake and Thomas must learn to trust each other. They know they’re the only ones who can stop this murderer, but can they do it without getting caught? These two men aren’t the only ones searching for answers. Susana, an eager journalist, and her detective friend are hot on their trail. For Jake and Thomas, it’s now a race against madness in an effort to save innocent lives from brutal torment. In the end, a decision must be made. How far are these two killers willing to go, and will this final fight put an end to their vigilante justice?

Dealing with general economic theory, other than employment theory, the book discusses the theory of pure and monopolistic competition - with a special emphasis upon welfare aspects. Beginning with an analysis of the consumer and of the individual firm, the main stress is nevertheless placed on the analysis of the economic system as a whole.

Militant Competition

Militant Competition

General, Social Sciences -> Political Science -> International Relations & Foreign Policy
Justin Conrad; William Spaniel
Published: 20210930
ISBN: 1108998461
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Militant groups often use violence, perversely, to gain attention and resources. In this book, the authors analyze how terrorist and rebel organizations compete with one another to secure funding and supporters. The authors develop a strategic model of competitive violence among militant groups and test the model's implications with statistical analysis and case studies. A series of model extensions allow the authors to incorporate the full range of strategic actors, focusing in particular on government efforts to counter and deter violence. The results indicate that the direct effects of competition are not as clear as they may seem, and interventions to alter competitive incentives may backfire if states are not careful. This is a timely contribution to a growing body of political economy research on militant group fragmentation, rivalry, fratricide and demonstrative violence.

Publisher: Taylor & Francis
Cartels, trusts and agreements to reduce competition between firms have existed for centuries, but became particularly prevalent toward the end of the 19th century. In the mid-20th century governments began to use so called ‘cartel registers’ to monitor and regulate their behaviour. This book provides cases studies from more than a dozen countries to examine the emergence, application and eventual decline of this form of regulation. Beginning with a comparison of the attitudes to regulation that led to monitoring, rather than prohibiting cartels, this book examines the international studies on cartels undertaken by the League of Nations before World War II. This is followed by a series of studies on the context of the registers, including the international context of the European Union, and the importance of lobby groups in shaping regulatory outcomes, using Finland as an example. Section two provides a broad international comparison of several countries’ registers, with individual studies on Norway, Australia, Japan, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands. After examining the impact of registration on business behaviour in the insurance industry, this book concludes with an overview of the lessons to be learnt from 20th century efforts to regulate competition. With a foreword by Harm Schroter, this book outlines the rise and fall of a system that allowed nations to tailor their approach to regulating competition to their individual circumstances whilst also responding to the pressures of globalisation that emerged after the Second World War. This book is suitable for those who are interested in and study economic history, international economics and business history. Chapter 10 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 licence and can be accessed in the 'Support Material' section on Routledge.com.

Scientific Competition :

Transforming Trauma Resilience and Healing Through Our Connections With Animals

Max Albert, Stefan Voigt, Dieter Schmidtchen
Published: 2008-01-01
ISBN: 316149413X
Publisher: Mohr Siebeck

Is science a 'market of ideas'? Not according to the economics of science. Science is competitive, but scientific competition is not market competition. Nor is scientific competition the same as competition between universities. Scientific competition is, first of all, competition between individual scientists. Current science policies shift the boundary between scientific competition, where scientists provide public goods in the hope to acquire status among their peers, and market competition in science, where the results of research are private property protected by patents or other means, in favor of the market. However, the economic ring of the political slogans cannot conceal a serious lack of understanding of scientific competition behind the reform proposals.

Competition Policy

Competition Policy

Industrial Management, General, BUS082000, cs.ecn.indus_organ, Business & Economics -> Decision Sciences -> Management Science, Business & Economics -> Economics -> General Economics
Massimo Motta
Published: 20040112
ISBN: 0511162707
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
This is the first book to provide a systematic treatment of the economics of antitrust (or competition policy) in a global context. It draws on the literature of industrial organisation and on original analyses to deal with such important issues as cartels, joint-ventures, mergers, vertical contracts, predatory pricing, exclusionary practices, and price discrimination, and to formulate policy implications on these issues. The interaction between theory and practice is one of the main features of the book, which contains frequent references to competition policy cases and a few fully developed case studies. The treatment is written to appeal to practitioners and students, to lawyers and economists. It is not only a textbook in economics for first year graduate or advanced undergraduate courses, but also a book for all those who wish to understand competition issues in a clear and rigorous way. Exercises and some solved problems are provided.
