Psychoanalysis and Motivation

Love and Lust On the Psychoanalysis of Romantic and Sexual Emotions

General, Applied Psychology, General, Mental Health, Social Sciences -> Psychology -> General, Social Sciences -> Psychology -> Applied Psychology, Social Sciences -> Psychology -> Psychotherapy, SCBE0505, Social Sciences -> Psychology -> Mental Illness
Joseph D. Lichtenberg
Published: 20130617
ISBN: 1135061122
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
Carrying forward his inquiry into the nature and conditions of normal and abnormal development, Lichtenberg focuses on motivation. His goal is to offer an alternative to psychoanalytic drive theory that accommodates the developmental insights of infancy research while accounting for the entire range of phenomena addressed by the theory of instinctual drives. To this end, he propounds a comprehensive theory of the self, which then gains expression in five discrete yet interactive motivational systems.

Motivation in War

Motivation in War

General, Social Sciences -> History -> Military History
Ilya Berkovich
Published: 20170116
ISBN: 1316733416
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
This book fundamentally revises our notion of why soldiers of the eighteenth century enlisted, served and fought. In contrast to traditional views of the brutal conditions supposedly prevailing in old-regime armies, Ilya Berkovich reveals that soldiers did not regard military discipline as illegitimate or unnecessarily cruel, nor did they perceive themselves as submissive military automatons. Instead he shows how these men embraced a unique corporate identity based on military professionalism, forceful masculinity and hostility toward civilians. These values fostered the notion of individual and collective soldierly honour which helped to create the bonding effect which contributed toward greater combat cohesion. Utilising research on military psychology and combat theory, and employing the letters, diaries and memoirs of around 250 private soldiers and non-commissioned officers from over a dozen different European armies, Motivation in War transforms our understanding of life of the common soldier in early modern Europe.

Literacy and Motivation

Literacy and Motivation Reading Engagement in individuals and Groups

General, Reading & Phonics, Professional, Career & Trade -> Education -> General, Professional, Career & Trade -> Education -> Curriculum & Instruction, SCED24, SCED1535, SCBE011542
Verhoeven, Ludo; Snow, Catherine E.
Published: 20010301
ISBN: 1135670757
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
The central question in this volume is how to create a society of "engaged readers" in today's world, where reading is increasingly overruled by other media, such as television and personal computers. Engaged readers, as the term is used in this book, means readers who are socially interactive, strategic, and motivated. This state-of-the-art review contains research on integrating cognitive, social, and motivational aspects of reading and reading instruction, the chapter authors argue that coming to grips with the notion of engagement in literacy requires redefining literacy itself to acknowledge the degree to which it is not only a cognitive accomplishment, but a social activity and an affective commitment as well. Promoting literacy acquisition thus requires interventions that address attitudes and beliefs as much as those that assure cognitive changes in learners. Equally important, the authors posit that literacy engagement involves the integration of cognitive strategies and motivational goals during literate activities. This necessary link between literacy and motivation is addressed from a variety of perspectives. Acknowledging the value of cross-national and cross-cultural comparisons, the book features chapters on the promotion of literacy in different regions around the world.

Motivation (psychology)
Susan Fowler

ISBN: 1523098635
Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Incorporated
If You Want To Accomplish What's Important To You, Discipline And Willpower Won't Get You Where You Need To Go. In This Iconoclastic New Book, Susan Fowler Reveals Compelling Insights And Actions To Help You Master And Maintain Your Motivation. Motivation Is At The Heart Of Everything You Do And Everything You Want To Do But Don't. Unfortunately, The Ways We Typically Motivate Ourselves Don't Work. Relying On Sheer Determination Eventually Becomes Exhausting—it's Not Sustainable. And Even Setting Goals Can Backfire—if You're Not Setting Them For The Right Reasons. Susan Fowler Says Motivation Is Energy, And What Matters Is The Quality, Not The Quantity. Traditional “motivators” Such As Fear, Guilt, Or The Promise Of A Reward Provide Low-quality, Short-term Energy. Drawing On The Latest Empirical Research, She Proves That High-quality, Optimal Motivation Is A Skill That You Can Learn And Apply. Science Tells Us That Satisfying Three Basic Needs—for Choice, Connection, And Competence—is Essential To Optimal Motivation. You Need To Feel Like You've Picked Your Path, Not That You're Being Driven Down It. Your Goal Should Be Linked To People Or A Purpose Meaningful To You. And You Want To Continually Learn And Grow. Through Practical Exercises And Eye-opening Stories, Fowler Shows You How To Identify And Shift The Quality Of Your Motivation. The Skill To Master Your Motivation Is Important—it May Be Your Greatest Opportunity To Evolve, Grow In Wisdom, And Be The Light The World So Desperately Needs.
